Moving From Idea to Action

@beyonce “Don’t just talk about it, be about it”- Beyoncé.  When I heard Beyoncé say this a few months ago, I knew I had to make some changes in my life. I realized that if I wanted to become the best version of myself, I couldn’t just say that I wanted to be better, but I had to quit doing the things that were holding me back and needed to start taking action.  7 Things I Did To Transition From Being A Dreamer to A Doer  I stopped focusing on obstacles and started looking for opportunities  I stopped trying to please everyone  I stopped making excuses and took accountability I stopped overthinking, prioritized progress over perfection  I stopped being afraid and took risks  I stopped sacrificing happiness, learned to prioritize self-care and cherish my relationships  I stopped fearing change, embraced personal and professional growth even when it felt uncomfortable  What will you do to move from idea to action? Let me know if you found these tips helpful.  Follow me on Instagram & share this post with a friend!

Alana’s Fitness Journey: Waist Beads For Weight Loss & Body Awareness

@alanamauree Growing up, I always played sports and maintained my healthy lifestyle that way. Once I got to college, I struggled with prioritizing my wellness on top of both professional and educational responsibilities. I found myself focusing on everything else but me; and I found my mental and physical health diminished.  As soon as COVID-19 hit, and we were sent home for summer break; I began to reflect on my current being and chose to make a change. I signed up with my now trainer, Preston, off of a referral from my friend on May 11, 2020. I soon fell in love with the gym, and started working out five/six times a week and often did two a day workouts. Weight training in the morning and then an evening run or walk. The gym and working out served as therapy as well.  As important as working out is, your diet is the most important aspect of trying to lose weight/toning up. Protein is your best friend. Another special thing that has helped me along my fitness journey is my waist beads from Miss Empowher. I have worn waist beads from Miss EmpowHer throughout my entire fitness journey.  They have helped me stay away from the scale and instead focus on tracking my inches around my waist as that is a huge target area for me as well.  The scale can be disheartening as muscle weighs more than fat, so as you tone, the scale might not reflect the actual fat you’ve lost. However, the waist beads function in a way that as you lose inches and fat around your waist and stomach, the waist beads drop. I’ve gone through three different waist beads as they’ve loosened up due to my weight loss requiring me to purchase some more. I absolutely love my waist beads from Miss EmpowHer! They are very stylish and functional as well! My fitness journey would not have been the same without them. Follow along on Alana’s fitness journey on Instagram at @livfitlana. She also does lash extensions in the Chapel-Hill/Durham area. Follow her @lashbylana to see her work.

@gabby3shabby “One day I decided that I was beautiful, and so I carried out my life as if I was a beautiful girl. I wear colors that I really like, I wear makeup that makes me feel pretty, and it really helps. It doesn’t have anything to do with how the world perceives you. What matters is what you see.” -Gabourey Sidibe, American actress @kendalljenner “What people don’t understand is calling someone too skinny is the same as calling someone too fat.” -Kendall Jenner, American model   @ashleygraham “When you look in the mirror and say, 'I'm ugly, I'm hideous, I'm fat,' at the end of the day, you are going to become ugly or fat [in your eyes]." -Ashley Graham, American model  @lupitanyongo “You can’t eat beauty; it doesn’t sustain you. Feel Like an Imposter? Don't Worry, You’re Not Alone.

My Journey Have you ever felt like in whichever setting or place you’re in, you do not belong? Like those around you will somehow one day discover you’re an imposter who does not deserve any of the accomplishments you have achieved? If so, I am here to tell you that you’re not alone. Having grown up in the South to immigrant parents from Mexico, I was never able to receive the guidance and mentorship I needed throughout my educational experience. As a result, my experience was filled with the pursuit of self-discovery all while also trying to navigate things like learning to read and write in English to going through the college application process. Throughout my educational experience, I always felt as if there was a need for me to go above and beyond in order to be at the same academic level as my classmates. However, even when doing so and being rewarded for it, I felt as if my efforts were only recognized for the pure sake of being the only Latinx student in my classes. This feeling continued into college where I often heard things like “you only got in because you’re Hispanic” and as much as I hate to say it, it got to me. I had (and continue to) struggle participating in class given the fear of saying something incorrect even when part of me knows that I’m not. However, if there is one thing college has taught me is that neither I nor you are alone. This cruel and hard to combat feeling is nothing other than the imposter syndrome. Imposter Syndrome? What does that look like? The imposter syndrome is a psychological phenomenon referring to a pattern of behavior in which individuals doubt their accomplishments and have a consistent, often internalized fear of being exposed as an imposter. Often people with imposter syndrome attribute luck or good timing to the accomplishments they have achieved. Not only that, but they often dismiss others who believe that they are more intelligent and competent than they actually are. Essentially, they remain convinced that they are not capable and do not deserve the success or position they are in. Now, with this, let’s take a look at some common signs of imposter syndrome which include: Self-Doubt Fear of being discovered Attributing own success to external factors Constant fear of not living up to expectations Negative self-talk Overachieving Constant comparison to other people Setting challenging goals and feeling disappointed when falling short Irrational fears of the future Now that I know what it is, How can I combat it? It is without a doubt that learning to overcome imposter syndrome can be challenging. However, here are some small steps you can take to combat it: Recognize imposter feelings when they emerge Remember that success is subjective Take ownership of your success Refrain failure as a learning opportunity Accept that perfectionism is impossible Set boundaries away from systems or individuals who do not contribute to your personal wellness and growth Have consistent self-care check-ins where you are kind to yourself Here's what you can do to support those with Imposter Syndrome: As someone who has been battling this syndrome for years now, I have recognized the importance of having a strong support system around me. Sharing feelings with trusted loved ones such as your parents and teachers, who have more experience, can reassure you that you’re worthy and capable of anything. Don’t let the fear of others finding out you’re a “fraud” get in the way of you seeking help. Let your guard down and let others who you trust see the real you. It is important that you recognize the symptoms of imposter syndrome amongst others. Listen to them whenever they are ready to open up but most importantly, reassure them that you’re proud and that you know they are capable of achieving all of their dreams. A Message from ME to YOU Remember that if you are ever feeling like an imposter, it means that you have achieved some form of success in your life that you’re simply neglecting. Instead, turn that feeling into gratitude and look at all that you have accomplished in life. Most individuals experience moments of doubt, and that is normal. However, we must not let that doubt control our actions. It is okay to have an imposter moment, but not an imposter life.

Redefining Sexy

@queensizeswap For me, being sexy is about being comfortable in your own skin. Sexy is a mindset. Confidence is a mindset. If you are struggling to feel sexy, start with these three steps. 1. Be mindful of how you speak to yourself. Stop focusing on the things you don’t like about your body and start focusing on the things you love about your body . Remember, where your focus goes, grows!   2. Stop comparing yourself to others.    3. Invest in your appearance. Keep in mind this looks different for everybody. For me, this meant getting a gym membership and upgrading my wardrobe.  What step will you be working on first? Follow me on Instagram & share this post with a friend !

How to Support Black-Owned Businesses and Brands

Supporting woman-owned and black-owned businesses not only yields a huge impact for the business world, but also socially, demonstrating the ability for these communities to be as successful or more than other business leaders you might support on a daily basis. This support helps these businesses thrive and spreads their popularity throughout the community. It is our responsibility to shop these businesses and ensure their success so black-owned businesses can continue to thrive in the future. There are a multitude of ways for us to support black-owned businesses and some are provided for you below.   Shop for black owned businesses: In many circumstances, black owned businesses will not widely be known. So, it is your responsibility to search for black owned businesses in your areas. To do this, if you are shopping for certain things that you don’t need from a specific chain, you should search to see if black owned businesses have it around you. Take advantage of online shopping: If there aren’t black businesses around you or ones that meet your certain needs, use social media or the internet to find businesses further from your local area and have the products shipped to you. This is also a great way to reach black owned businesses on a national scale. Promote and share black owned businesses on social media: If you find a great black owned business, share it! You can do this through verbally telling people, but to reach a larger audience you can share the business on your social media accounts. This will gain more traffic to their websites and social media pages, which will hopefully bring more business.   While taking these small steps every day can help support black businesses, there are also other larger goals that need to be addressed. For example, funding and mentorship opportunities should be provided for black owned businesses and black entrepreneurs. It is extremely important to give both current and future black entrepreneurs the sufficient tools to know how to operate a business and take it to the next level. In addition to this, these opportunities could increase the success rates of their businesses, and younger black women will be more willing to start their own businesses as well. This example of a larger and less day-to-day action is just as important because these blacked owned businesses don’t yield the same funding that many white businesses obtain from large corporations, venture capital firms, and angel investors. In fact, less than 1% of venture capital goes to black businesses. You are bringing a huge impact when supporting black owned businesses. It shows you that support businesses that align with your values and that you want to create that societal and corporate change.   For business owners: Your work inspires people on a national scale to start their own businesses and pave way for more people of color in the corporate world. You should continue to keep your momentum, even after the struggles of the past year with the Covid-19 pandemic. To do this, you should build your network in an authentic way. Companies and individuals are more inclined to support black businesses than in the past. So, right now is a great time to create new relationships, including ones through media as well as investors. Your network is your net worth. LinkedIn is also a great resource to build relationships with others and grow your business as well.

By growing into the most confident version of yourself, you can best utilize your strengths and personal experiences in interviews, in your entrepreneurial endeavors, and in your relationships.  We’ve compiled some of our best tips for exuding confidence from the moment you wake up to the end of a long work day below. 1. Supporting Your Friends' Goals

Miss EmpowHer strives to promote female empowerment and supporting women.  One way we do so is through the Women Supporting Women program, which is a fundraising initiative that aims to support women’s groups and organizations of all kinds. On a more personal level, we believe in strong female friendship and support among women of all shapes and shades! We love to see women sharing in one another’s successes, and so we’ve put together some advice on how to best encourage the women in your life by supporting their personal and professional goals.    @stxphxny Healthy friendships are those where you hold one another accountable, lift one another up, and encourage one another to be your best selves. One complicated aspect of supporting friends is giving them feedback. Sometimes it seems as though the best kind of support is unconditional cheerleading and praise. But in the long-run, sometimes the most beneficial feedback you can give a friend is growth-focused. This doesn't mean criticizing a friend, but offering positive advice when appropriate, and or just listening and providing your personal insight to what they have to say about their goals and journeys to reaching them. Even if you don’t know much about the area they are trying to improve in, thoughtful listening is a great tool for supporting and encouraging a friend. While the paths towards reaching our goals often involve ups and downs, it is also important not to let your friends give up on their goals. Being a strong, engaged listener throughout their process can help you later remind them why they set their goals in the first place.  Sometimes rough patches can deeply affect our emotions, and a friend is a great place to get some perspective. You can help a friend think through the harder parts of their journey as someone less emotionally and personally involved in their process. Lastly, it is critical that you celebrate your friends’ successes without jealousy and comparison. Keep in mind that while you should be supporting one another in achieving your goals, you and your friends are different people with different paths, and their achievements do not make yours less valid. Being there for your friends during their biggest successes is just as important as helping them through their low points. Celebrate your friends the way you want to be celebrated during your biggest achievements!  Being a positive presence in your friends’ lives will improve your own well being and sense of self-worth as well. Be the friend you know your besties deserve, and they will do the same for you!

Maintaining a Healthy Work Life Balance – Even During a Global Pandemic

Now that so many of us are working from home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it can be difficult to separate our personal and work lives, and it can be especially difficult to feel fully removed from our work lives enough to truly take time for ourselves. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, self-care is more important than ever, so we’ve put together some advice for maintaining a healthy work life balance and ensuring that you’re taking care of yourself and your mental health during such difficult and unpredictable times. During work hours, set reachable, reasonable goals for yourself. Giving yourself manageable tasks will help you feel accomplished and productive during designated work time so that you don’t feel so much pressure to let work infiltrate your personal time. Be a good communicator. Whether at work or in your personal life, communicate when you need extra flexibility. Consistent communication will help you maintain healthy relationships, both professional and personal. Make sure to unplug. Work-from-home environments often require long hours in front of computers and virtual meetings, and it’s so important to give your eyes a rest from technology when you get the chance to. Focus on self-care that allows you to take a break from the screens – read a good book you’ve been meaning to pick up or take an extra 10 minutes for skincare some time. Stay active when possible. Without commutes to work, many people who work from home are unwittingly moving around a lot less than they are accustomed to. Set reminders to stand out and walk around throughout the day or make time for your favorite workout. At work, take breaks when needed. Small breaks will help your decision-making and help clear your head. Instead of trying to avoid taking breaks, focus on how they will make you even more productive in the long run. Delegate. Make sure that in your personal life, responsibilities are distributed evenly, and everyone is equally committed to maintaining healthy relationships. At work, ask for help when you need it, and trust your coworkers’ skills and willingness to help you out. Trying to improve your work life balance may seem daunting during a time where we are so accessible through technology, and it can often feel like there is no boundary between work and personal spaces. However, creating a healthy balance will make you happier and more successful in both your professional and personal lives, which is worth the time you will put into creating healthy habits!
