How to Speak More Confidently in Class: Closing the Confidence Gap At College

@pinterest Some of you may have witnessed what I have in the classroom: female students not participating as much as their male counterparts. The male students fill the silence while the female ones won’t out of fear of being wrong, girls raise their hands at around head level with the boys proudly raise their hands as far as their arms will extend, girls struggle to get a response out in class without stumbling over “ums” and “likes,” and girls, at times, will perfectly articulate a salient, well-thought out response, only to end it by saying “if that makes any sense.”   The reason for this isn't that boys have more to say; the reason for this is that girls are told from an early age to be quiet more often and to take up less space.   While public speaking is something that a lot of people struggle with, along with not saying “like” and “um” constantly, it is possible for young women to work past their anxiety in order to speak up more in class, make excellent points, and then stick the landing. Here are some ways to boost your confidence level and contribute to the class conversation like a natural: Listening to a confidence-inspiring, girl power playlist: There’s nothing like dropping the needle first thing in the morning to put you in the right mindset. I start off every morning to “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone, followed by “I Feel the Earth Move” by Carole King, and “You’re so Vain,” by Carly Simon, a regimen my father put me on when I was in high school. If you want music from this century, “Little Me,” by Little Mix perfectly encapsulates the attitude for telling your young, female self “to speak up” and “be a little bit louder, be a bit prouder.” Watching that scene from Legally Blonde: “I’ll show you how valuable Elle Woods can be,” Reese Witherspoon says as she storms off in her Playboy bunny costume. Then begins a montage of the iconic Elle Woods buying a laptop (still in costume), getting in shape, carrying books, and, most importantly, killing it in the classroom and impressing her professors. She does all of this without succumbing to the nastiness of her naysayers. You can show them how valuable you can be by watching this scene on repeat, as I did during my freshman year of college, and really internalizing the motivation that is coursing through Elle Woods in that moment.  Sitting and raising your hand with more confidence:  This advice might seem a bit strange: increase your confidence by acting like you're already confident, but social psychologist Amy Cuddy gave a Ted Talk in which she discussed the effect that our posture and body language has on our confidence level and broke down the disparities that you witness in posture, especially when it comes to gender. The way to combat this, according to Cuddy, is for women and girls to strike more confidence-inspiring poses, as faking confidence leads to the creation of actual confidence, according to her research. “Don’t fake it til you make it,” she says, “fake it til you become it.” In conclusion: Raise your hand as high as you can, even if you aren’t that sure of your answer. Avoid your "likes" and your "ums", but don't beat yourself up when they happen. Never end a statement by saying “if that makes any sense.” Start everyday with powerful music that’ll make you feel like a powerful woman and, when necessary, channel Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.  Then, you will be right on your way towards being the best student in the class, or at least, the most confident one.

Here’s to Barbiecore and to no longer being “not like other girls”

@pinterest Barbiecore has entered the fashion zeitgeist as the hottest fashion trend of the summer, courtesy of director Greta Gerwig, whose highly-anticipated, upcoming Barbie movie has everyone excited to see Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling grace the screen in hot pink neon. Barbiecore is a fashion movement filled with a flood of hot pink and magenta colors, usually being worn on dresses, skirts, and platform heels, allowing girls to embrace unapologetic girliness and femininity, like Barbie herself. It is the latest in a long line of fashion trends sweeping the world of fashion, but its relevance goes beyond good looking clothes.  Barbiecore offers a rebuttal of the “not like other girls phenomenon,” a form of denouncing femininity, in which girls proudly declare themselves as being “not like other girls,” in order to gain more respect for themselves and to make themselves seem more desirable to boys. The term “not like other girls,” hints at a low-maintenance girl who isn’t afraid to eat lots of food, isn’t shrill, and doesn’t care about her appearance, but does so by putting down the type of girl who does care about all of those things. Pushback against the “not like other girls” trope has been long standing, with its sexist connotations being emphasized. Barbiecore is a celebration of femininity by letting girls know that it is okay to be like other girls, wearing pink and caring about your appearance. The implicit joy of these bright colors is a welcome change from other fashion movements. It’s warm and cheerful, implying and prioritizing the happiness of the wearer. Encouragingly, Barbiecore has caught on in a big way, with celebrities stepping out in full pink. Female celebrities who have exuded this girl power aesthetic include: Zendaya, Lana Condor, Sydney Sweeney, Hwasa, Anne Hathway, Ariana DeBose, Ashley Park, Anya Taylor-Joy, Kylie Jenner, Lizzo, Hailey Bieber, Florence Pugh, and Kim Kardashian. The verdict is in: Barbiecore has been the answer to our “not like other girls” prayers. Now, if you say that you’re like other girls, the response should be: come on Barbie, let's go party.  How to get the Barbiecore look: There are a few hallmarks for the Barbiecore look. Barbiecore is all about the cohesion and the soft lines of the silhouette. Outfits are typically form fitting and polished, giving an elevated look to casual clothes worn on a daily basis. Think Cher from Clueless.  Barbiecore can be either minimalist or maximalist. Like the original mattel doll, you can come with whatever accessories you'd like. Articles of clothing to buy: Platform heels Plastic skirts Heavily-patterned Y2K vintage  Fuzzy slippers Heart shaped glasses Hairbands Colors to look out for: (hint: there’s so much pink) Bubblegum pink Hot pink Magenta Neon/highlighter colors Reminder: the louder the hue, the better. Makeup: With this also comes an unapologetic attitude towards makeup Lip gloss Pink eyeshadow A touch of glitter Pink nails (either pale pink or a darker shade) Once you get the Barbiecore look down, you’ll be a Barbie girl in a Barbie world.

Gen Z Fashion Trends: How And Why You Should Thrift

@pinterest It’s nothing new. The backlash against shopping at fast fashion places has been around almost since it started, with people vowing to avoid H&M, American Eagle, and other retail places that make low-quality clothing in other parts of the world. In order to change their ways, people are choosing to spend their money elsewhere with “thrifting” shining through as the most ethical alternative and secondhand shopping has never been easier with websites like Poshmark and ThredUp servicing people everyday.  So here are all of the reasons why you should take up thrift shopping if you haven’t already, and a few tips on how you should go about it. Cue Macklemore.  Why you should thrift: It protects the environment. When people go thrifting they’re buying recycled clothes, breaking out of the damaging cycle of overconsumption. The fast fashion movement has gone a long way towards destroying the environment with fast fashion clothing being fast to make and fast to break, ending up in landfills sooner rather than later. Also, the production of these clothes puts a strain on the environment. According to the United Nations, it takes 2,000 gallons of water to make a single pair of jeans, which is roughly the same amount of water your average person drinks in seven years.  You aren’t giving money to a label that utilizes sweatshops. Many of our beloved fashion labels are guilty of having their products made in sweatshops that are known for human rights violations. By not going straight to the source, you are skirting the companies that exploit child labor in other countries. Hopefully, in doing so, it will create enough of a chain reaction that will change these policies.  It can be extremely affordable. If you’re a girl on a budget, thrifting can be a more affordable option, where you can get stylish, high-quality pieces for less than you would have originally. Anytime something has been used by a previous owner, it has depreciated in value (although it does not have to have lost value in your eyes). You are, therefore, inevitably buying an outfit for less than it was worth.  How you should thrift:  Do not thrift in a way that might impact low-income consumers Avoid places like the Salvation Army and Goodwill, as shopping there can impact low-income consumers. If you shop at places that typically cater to low-income consumers then you run the risk of gentrifying the clothing store, effectively driving up the prices and making it more difficult for poor people to buy clothes. You still can buy secondhand clothes, with there being high and low ends to secondhand shopping, just make sure that you do it at a higher-end place.  Don’t shame those who still buy fast fashion With all of these ethical reasons outlined, it’s not hard to gain a complex as to why thrifting makes you a more conscientious consumer, but many people cannot drop the habit of buying retail simply because fast fashion is too beneficial to them. One of the main reasons why fast fashion is so successful is because it is incredibly inexpensive and therefore necessary for low income consumers. These clothing labels offer a level of stability to many people’s daily lives.  So there you have it: the ethical reasons why you should thrift and the ethical ways to thrift. Have fun shopping!

Not Quite A Girl, Not Yet A Woman: Navigating the Phase of Disappearing Girlhood

@elenataber That late-teens transition from girlhood to womanhood can be a dive into the deep end. It’s not as simple as it is in a Hollywood movie, where you meet the right guy on summer vacation and suddenly “nobody puts Baby in a corner” anymore. It usually takes more than one summer to start feeling more like an adult and it usually takes more than ditching your parents for a hot guy, even if he does look like Patrick Swayze.  There are a lot of things that won’t make you feel more mature. Looking more mature, having lots of money, drinking too much, or even a passionate relationship all sound character-building in theory, but they only work so long as the more substantial parts of your life are taken care of first. So here’s a list of actual character-building ways to age gracefully as a young woman:   Set healthy boundaries with your parents   Growing up can be more painstaking for your parents than for you, so making sure that they are along with you for the ride is important, without sacrificing any of your newfound independence. Set clear boundaries with them when it comes to curfew, spending money, and who you spend your time with. Talk to them about whether or not they respect your choices. Whether or not they like the person you’re dating should not be a deal breaker, but it’s important to develop a mutual respect.    Experiment with your style   Figuring out what your style is and what you like can be extremely empowering. Developing your own taste without being influenced by those who have dictated it all your life is an important exercise in independence. Style, though, goes far beyond just what you wear. What kind of music you like, your favorite movies, and your choice of books all go towards developing your sense of self. If you already have a strong sense of self and an even stronger sense of style, then just make sure you embrace it wholeheartedly.     Find your loyal band of friends to navigate this with    Having like-minded friends who you like to be around goes a long way. That said, making sure that you have the right friends by your side is crucial. People who don’t support you needn’t be there for your transformation and toxic friends, unfortunately, are a dime-a-dozen. Choose your friends wisely and don’t be afraid to let people go.   Developing a healthy lifestyle   Developing adequate lifestyle choices and taking care of yourself might be the most important factor when it comes to entering adulthood. Eating and sleeping properly, while not always glamorous, helps make a person look and feel good, giving them the proper tools to handle whatever comes their way. A proper lifestyle goes beyond a good skincare routine and surface-level self-care. Doing what’s right for your mental health and taking care of the basics is essential for growing up, as they increasingly become your responsibility.    Date at your own pace   This piece of advice should seem obvious but is often hard to remember when talking with others who’ve already had countless boyfriends and no shortage of dating experience. It’s important to keep in mind during these conversations, and every other time, that everybody goes at their own pace and you’re no different.     It’s okay not to have things all figured out, but so long as you’re constantly working on yourself and have the right people by your side, you’re on the right track. Hopefully, this will go a long way not just to feeling like an adult, but having your family members see you as one as well.

An Over Packer's Guide to Packing Light

For as long as I can remember I have always had the urge to pack a copious amount of clothes, shoes, and random items for any trip that I have taken. I would bring seven outfits for two-day trips and fifteen for seven-day trips. Over the past few years when I have started to take bigger trips with less room and a lack of desire to check a bag on flights, I have searched for ways to pack light. It has taken a while, but I have finally mastered the art of packing light and combatting the urge to take far more items than necessary. I have compiled a list of tips and tricks to help my fellow over packers.   Invest in packing cubes. Packing cubes are an easy and quick way to organize your suitcase and maximize space. On my last 7-day vacation I was easily able to fit 8 outfits, my toiletries, and two pairs of shoes in my carry-on, where I usually struggle to fit the same amount in minus the packing cubes. Only pack things you know that you will wear. A huge part of my overpacking is that I can never decide what I will wear on my trips. So, before I leave, I always check the weather to make sure that I pack accordingly. I am guilty of packing clothes that I want to be comfortable wearing but always end up being uncomfortable in, so I always make sure that I bring clothes that I know I am comfortable wearing. Check the amenities of wherever you are staying. Sometimes the rental properties or hotels that you stay at have washing machines and dyers and usually have smaller packaged laundry detergent. If I know that somewhere I am staying has one of these amenities, sometimes I pack lighter and plan to do laundry. Pack accordingly to your plans. No matter my destination, I have always prioritized packing a set number of outfits. However, now that I have started to travel more, I have begun to look at my itineraries and packed according to them. If I am travelling to the beach and know that I will be spending most of my time on the beach or by the pool, I mostly pack swimsuits.  Invest in travel sized toiletries. For a long time, I attempted to fit all my full-sized shower and beauty products in my suitcases with all my clothes and shoes. Toiletries take up most of the space in my luggage, so when I started to downsize and take travel sized items, I had so much more space.   Overall, I hope these tips and tricks help to alleviate the stress that comes with being an over packer or even just for packing your luggage in general.

Empowered Women, Power Women

@pinterest We’ve all, if not most of us, have experienced a time where we felt as though we didn’t quite fit in. Receiving side eyes, snide remarks, and backhanded compliments from other girls alike. But ladies, let’s be real, have you ever been one of those mean girls? Because we’ve grown and matured we’d like to think that being a “mean girl” is a thing of the past. It seems elementary, immature even, and it is but that does not mean that this trope doesn’t exist in our adult lives and that some of us have adopted it at times. Try to think of a time where you may not have been a light in another woman’s life. Even if you can’t or can, here are some ways we can do better by each other. Turn “Competition” into Congratulation  We as women have fought for so long to have a valuable seat at the table. Whether that be in tech, in the OR, or on the Supreme Court. We know what it means to work ten times harder therefore whenever you see another woman achieving great things, celebrate her. In the end, it's a win for all of us. Dish Out Random Compliments  Have you ever been walking down the street and really liked someone's hair, shoes, etc? Let her know! You may have to step out of your comfort zone but it’ll brighten another woman’s day. Scrolling on Instagram and liking a picture is one thing but try swiping up on a story and spreading love, it’ll mean a lot.  Embrace What Makes Us Different  As we head into the big girl world, we will be introduced to women from various backgrounds, different sizes, skin tones, dialects, all the things that make us uniquely beautiful. Instead of allowing these facets to create a divide, allow them to create a space of unity.  Help A Girl Out If you see another woman’s hair out of place, kindly ask if you could fix it. If you see that another woman is struggling with something, lend a hand. We are not placed on this earth to gate keep kindness. Spread it! To be a truly empowered woman, it takes a little bit of self reflection. Don’t be afraid to acknowledge your faults and, most importantly, grow from them. Hopefully these four tips will allow you to build and foster safer and more uplifting spaces!

College Dorm Must Haves

As an incoming college freshman, it can be very overwhelming figuring out what classes to register for, deciding where you will live and what meal plan you want to have, and just simply getting in the groove of things in the next chapter in your life. Figuring out what you will need, buying these things, and then moving everything in is something that is very stressful even though it doesn’t have to be. I have compiled a list of the top 6 must have items for your college dorm to hopefully help alleviate some of the stress that comes with all the tasks of being a college freshman.   Twin XL Foam Mattress Topper Mattresses in dorm rooms are by far one of the most uncomfortable things that many people will sleep on. When living in a dorm, you must sleep in this bed every night for roughly 8 months. The best way to make your bed more comfortable is by using a mattress topper. The best part about these is that you can find one that suits you best, so if you prefer a firmer or softer mattress you have the option for either. Clip-On Fan Personally, the best thing that I bought for my dorm was a mini fan that could both sit on my desk and clip onto my bed rail. Depending on many factors like where you live, the school you go to, and the dorm that you are living in, air condition might not be a functional option, so especially on hot nights, this item was a must. Surge Protector and Power Strip Another thing that dorm rooms lack is outlets and with all the things that are in a dorm that require to be plugged in, power strips are a necessity. Plastic Shower Caddy and Shower Shoes Freshman year, I made the mistake of using a mesh/cloth shower caddy and halfway through the year it was super gross. When I switched to a plastic one it was a lot easier to carry and easier to clean. Shower shoes are also super important because sometimes the bathrooms and showers are not as clean as one might prefer. Extra Long Phone Charger A popular layout for dorm rooms is having your bed lofted and a standard-length charger definitely will not work with that. So, having a longer charger is helpful if you want to have your phone in bed with you while it is charging. Storage. Storage. Storage. Organizing a small space with quite a bit of stuff is no easy task, so the most important dorm essential is going to be storage. The nice thing about storage is that you can choose what you use and how you use it. Personally, my roommate and I had a shelf that fit over our fridge that we decorated, and it held our microwave, Keurig, and dishes. We also had cubic storage shelves that we divided and were able to personalize our own. It is all about doing what you want with it and making the space your own!   I know being an incoming freshman can be scary and overwhelming because you are taking big steps towards your future. But I hope that this list takes away some of the concerns and worry you may have for moving into your dorm room. Must Have Accessories: A Summertime Accessory Guide

Finding and styling the right outfits and accessories during summer months is one of my favorite things to do every morning. Whether I must wear a uniform for work, or I want to have either a dress up or dress down day, I always make sure to spice up my outfits with my favorite summertime accessories. I have put together a list of a few must have accessories that can be worn for any occasion.   Sunglasses. My all-time favorite way to spruce up an outfit is a pair of sunglasses or “sunnies”. I always have a pair of sunnies on top of my head whether I have all the windows of my car rolled down and am driving around, laying by the pool, or sipping a latte at my favorite coffee shop. Some of my favorite pairs have been found in sale sections and on amazon so this accessory has always been priced nicely.   Earrings. The second way that I like to accessorize any outfit is a pair or multiple pairs of earrings. Hoops, studs, or any pair that dangles, I always enjoy picking out plain gold earrings or a cute, beaded pair. This piece of jewelry really ties any outfit together, even if you are just hanging around the house in loungewear.   Cross-body belt pack. Lately, wearing belt bags across your body has been a growing trend that I have noticed on platforms like TikTok. At first, I was not a fan, but the convenience and multiple ways that you can style this accessory has really won me over. I found a super cute Amazon dupe that I always make sure to carry when I go out during the day.    Waist beads. Last but not least, one of my all-time favorite ways to accessorize is with Miss EmpowHer waist beads. Anytime I wear a shorter fitted shirt or a bikini my confidence is automatically boosted while wearing waist beads. Any excuse I have to wear my waist beads, I take because it is so easy to style them, and they add so much character to any outfit.   If you are looking for anyway to spice up an outfit whether it is for going out or to boost your confidence while staying in this summer, I recommend any of these accessories or playing around to find your own signature accessory! If you are interested in any of these accessories and my other favorites, check out our Amazon Storefront.    https://www.amazon.com/shop/caitlynkumi

5 Tips to Improve Your Resume

You’ve put in the work to have some incredible things on your resume. Whether it be an internship, job, volunteering, or something else amazing, you deserve to get credit for the awesome things you’ve done. But, when it comes to actually writing your resume, you need to be sure you’re using the right words to convey the significance of your accomplishments. I’ve been lucky to have a lot of intelligent people give me resume advice over the years, so it only feels right to pass on what I’ve learned. Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume to ensure it’s the best it can be.  Keep it concise. The people reading your resume, just like all of us, have short attention spans. You don’t want your main points to get lost inside of long, wordy sentences. Be sure to explicitly state your accomplishments in as few words as possible. If possible, it’s best to have your resume only be one page long— any longer, people stop paying attention. List experiences in order from most to least recent. Your resume is meant to be a timeline of your experiences, so it will be most effective if you list them in chronological order, with your most recent experience first. This will make it easier for the resume reader to see a more clear picture of the things you’ve done.  Use action verbs. Using strong action verbs helps to effectively convey the work you did. Start every bullet point listed below your experiences with an action verb that reflects your role. Don’t repeat verbs— if you get stuck, Google “strong action verbs” and search around for inspiration. Here is a helpful resource for action verbs for your resume.  Provide quantifiable results. When listing the results of your work, try to include numerical values. This will give those reading your resume a better grasp on the direct effect you had. Quantifiable results can be anything from increasing website traffic by a certain percentage to generating a certain amount of profit. Even 100% completion rate or 0% error rate counts as quantifiable. Here is a useful resource for quantifying your results.  Be descriptive as possible. Start by answering who, what, where, when, why, and how (if applicable) to provide depth to your experiences. Then, you can add in your quantifiable data and provide any other essential information. Be sure to identify who benefited from your work as well.
